THIEL MEN COME UP SHORT IN 65-57 LOSS AT GROVE CITY

GROVE CITY, Pa. (Feb. 23) -- The Thiel College men's basketball came up short in its 65-57 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Grove City College Saturday afternoon.

Thiel (10-14, 4-8) senior forward Joe Herrmann (Hartstown/Jamestown) (Hartstown/Jamestown) registered a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Keebo Dowe (Martinsburg, W. Va./Edison Twp.) (Martinsburg, W. Va./Edison Twp.) added 10 points, four blocks and three rebounds while freshman forward Tommy Hall (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell) (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell) chipped in with six points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The Tomcats shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor but hit just 5-of-17 (29.4%) three-point tries. The Tomcats also finished with a 35-31 edge in rebounding.

Ryan Gerber led the Wolverines (16-9, 9-3) with 21 points. Shawn Carr totaled 15 points and five rebounds while Ryan Gibson added 11 points and four rebounds in 31 minutes off of the bench. Grove City shot 43.8 percent (21-48) from the field and 10-of-20 from three-point range.

Leading 11-6 with just under 11 minutes to play the Wolverines strung together an 11-2 run over the following 6:11 and went up 14, 22-8, with 4:41 to go before the half. A 12-4 Tomcat spurt to close out the first half brought the visitors back to within six, 26-20, heading into the break.

Grove City opened the second period by outscoring Thiel 11-5 and pushed its lead to 12, 37-25, with 17:39 remaining. Thiel was able to put together a 13-3 run over the next 5:14 and got back to within two, 40-38, with 12:25 to play. After Herrmann's three cut the deficit to three, 46-43, with just over nine minutes to play, the Wolverines outscored the Tomcats 13-4 and went back in front by 12, 59-47, with 2:11 to go.

Thiel enters the PAC Championship Tournament as the number six seed and will travel to third-seeded Washington & Jefferson College on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The start time has yet to be determined.
