Joe Herrmann (Hartstown/Jamestown) (Hartstown/Jamestown) fired in a team-high 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists.
Junior guard Brandon Mirizio (West Middlesex/Kennedy Catholic) (West Middlesex/Kennedy Catholic) scored a season-high 18 points and registered seven assists and freshman guard Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./George Junior Republic) (Philadelphia/George Junior Republic) added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Freshman forward Tommy Hall (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell) (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell) chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Thiel (10-13), who had dropped its last four straight prior to Wednesday's win, shot 57.9 percent (33-57) from the floor and finished with a 44-35 edge in rebounding.
Geneva's (12-12) Bryan Hill registered a game-best 31 points, hitting 10-of-27 from the floor and 9-of-25 from three-point range. Greg McDivitt finished with 24 points and 10 boards. The Golden Tornadoes shot 36.0 (27-75) from the floor and 34.2 percent (13-38) from three-point range.
Geneva assumed a 22-11 lead with just over 13 minutes to go in the first half before a Herrmann three capped an 18-3 Tomcat run and put the home team up by four, 29-25, with just over eight minutes to go in the first. Hill's three-pointer with 4:51 remaining cut the Thiel lead to three, 39-36, which sparked a 12-4 Tomcat run that put Thiel up by 11, 51-40, with just over a minute to go in the opening half. The Tomcats went into the break leading 51-42. Hill was 8-of-16 from the floor and 7-of-15 in the first half, leading the Golden Tornadoes with 25 points.
Thiel scored the first five points of the second half to extend its lead to 14, 56-42, with 2:26 gone in the second. Geneva responded with a 21-9 spurt that pulled them back to within two, 65-63, with 8:33 to play. Mirizio's layup with just over two minutes to go put the Tomcats back in front by seven, 79-72. Mike Ross' three-pointer with 1:12 remaining cut the Thiel lead to three, 81-78, and Hill's three with 25 seconds to play tied the game at 81-81. Following a Thiel miss Hill's three with one second remaining went wide, forcing overtime.
A Herrmann free throw and Hall layup put Thiel up by three, 84-81, with 4:16 to go in the extra period. A pair of Ross free throws cut the lead down to one, 84-83, before Adams' layup with 26 seconds left pushed the Tomcat lead back to three, 86-83. Zac Northen's layup with 16 seconds to play once again cut the lead to one, 86-85, but Mirizio managed to hit 1-of-2 free throws with 15 seconds to go and put the Tomcats ahead by two, 87-85. Hill had a look a three with seven seconds to play that was rebounded by Ross and passed to Joey Deep for another shot with one second on the clock, but that attempt also failed as the host Tomcats prevailed 87-85.
Thiel will close out its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) regular season schedule on Saturday, Feb. 23 when it travels to rival Grove City College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
