Waynesburg upsets Thiel in opening round

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The fifth-seeded Waynesburg Yellow Jackets upset the fourth-seeded Thiel Tomcats, 3-1 (25-13, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20), in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday evening at Beeghly Gymnasium.
The loss marked a disappointing end to a season in which the young Tomcats won 14 matches, including eight in-conference.
Junior Abbey Kiger led the Thiel offense with 14 kills, while sophomore Madison Chylik tabbed 32 assists.
Five Tomcats notched double-digit digs, led by Danielle Dwyer with 16. Kiger and Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) each had 14, while Stephanie Shipley (13) and Chelsi Clark (10) rounded out defensive leaders.
After Waynesburg cruised to a game-one win, Thiel put together a stronger effort in game two, but fell short, 25-22. The Tomcats finally broke into the win column with a 25-18 win in game three to avoid the sweep. Another tight game was on tap in the fourth set, but the Yellow Jackets hunkered down to prevail, 25-20.
Thiel ended its season with a 14-18 record. Waynesburg (11-19; 7-9) advances to face no. 1 Westminster on Friday.
