PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Three Thiel College players scored 19 points or more as the Tomcats earned their first win of the season, 86-78, over Penn State Beaver on the second day of the Chron's Classic on the campus of La Roche College.
Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./George Junior Republic) scored 26,
Brandon Mirizio (West Middlesex/Kennedy Catholic) scored 21, and Roddy Fuller scored 19 to lead the Tomcats to their first win of the season. Thiel shrugged off its early-season trend of starting cold, to fire a blistering 60 percent in the first half. The 'Cats wound up shooting nearly 56 percent on the afternoon.
Thiel capitalized on a season-high 32 trips to the foul line by cashing in on 22 tries, converting on a nearly 69 percent clip.
Penn State Beaver was led by Tim Kubis, who poured in 25 points.
The game wasn't settled until the final minute, when Mirizio converted on six of six free throw attempts to seal the win. The senior point guard finished 11 of 12 from the stripe on the day.
Thiel is off until Tuesday when it takes on Division I Eastern Kentucky.
