LATROBE, Pa. – In a game dictated by offense, Thiel College's proved the greater, as the Tomcats rode a 19-point second half to earn its second win of the season, 36-22, at Saint Vincent's Chuck Noll Field on Saturday afternoon.
Other than the eventual outcome, the game bore little resemblance to last year's romp over the Bearcats. Thiel drew first blood in the game's first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from
Willie Bova (Port Allegany, Pa., Port Allegany) to
Jeremiah Wagner (Galeton, Pa., Coudersport). The
John Madeline (Hubbard, Ohio, Hubbard) PAT moved the Thiel lead to 7-0.
Not two minutes into the second half, the Bearcats responded on a 18-yard TD grab by Phil Masciantonio. A missed extra point prevented SVC from tying the match. But the deficit would be short-lived.
On the ensuing Thiel possession, the Bearcats' Roscoe Barber picked a Bova pass and weaved his way 53 yards to pay dirt. The two-point conversion failed, but Saint Vincent had its first advantage of the game, 12-7.
Thiel scored the game's next 10 points before the intermission on a 26-yard Madeline field goal and an impressive no-huddle drive culminating with a 27-yard Bova pass to
Brendan Taylor (Girard, Girard), to give the Tomcats a 17-12 lead heading into the intermission.
The second half belonged to the Tomcats.
After Saint Vincent converted on a 26-yard field goal, Thiel took control of the game by scoring the contest's next 19 points.
Taylor scored his second touchdown of the day on a 13-yard rope from Bova in the third quarter, with Madeline running for the two-point conversion. Madeline extended the lead on Thiel's next scoring drive via a 30-yard boot.
Bova ran for the Tomcat's final touchdown of the day, with
Tim Van Horn (Leechburg, Pa., Kiski Area) hauling in a pass on the ensuing two-point play.
Saint Vincent closed out the scorebook on a Sheldon Loughner touchdown pass with six minutes remaining in the game.
Bova finished the day with a 105 yards and a touchdown on the ground in addition to a 258-yard, three-TD air campaign. Van Horn and Taylor each caught seven passes for 60 and 87 yards, respectively.
Clint Walker (Madison, Ohio, Madison) paced Thiel defensively, with eight tackles including one for a loss. Walker also intercepted a pass to end Saint Vincent's final drive.
The Tomcats (2-6; 1-3 PAC) will play their home finale next week when they welcome Waynesburg.
