GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2008) – Thiel completed a season sweep of Waynesburg with a, 3-2 (25-10, 15-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-9) , win on the Beeghly Gymnasium volleyball court Wednesday night to improve to 10-11 on the season and 6-3 in Presidents' Athletic Conference.
With the victory, Thiel surpassed its league and overall win totals from a season ago and guaranteed its most conference victories since going 9-2 in 1986.
Waynesburg, which fell to 7-11 (3-5 PAC) with the loss, proved to be a much most resilient team than the team the Tomcats defeated, 3-1, on Sept. 18, by trading games like punches through the matches first four sets.
Thiel, however, regained some of its dominating game one form to earn a six point decision in the fifth and deciding game.
Abbey Kiger (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) fired 22 kills on the evening to pace the Blue and Gold, while Madison Chylik (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) dished out 48 assists.
Libero Stephanie Shipley (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) led Thiel in digs with 17, but was followed closely by Chylik and Danielle Dywer (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) who defended 14 and 12 Yellow Jacket attacks, respectively.
Thiel will take a short break from league play on Saturday when they visit Hiram for a tri-match, which also features Oberlin.
