GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 2, 2008) – In a mid-season matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference frontrunners, the Washington & Jefferson Presidents overtook the Thiel Tomcats, 3-0 (27-25, 27-25, 25-23), in women's volleyball action Thursday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Despite suffering a sweep to fall to 8-10 overall and 4-2 in the PAC, Thiel lost the match by a combined six points – the lowest possible point differential for a three-game set.
“We basically gave away each game,” said Thiel head coach Steve Brewer of his team's 30 errors on the night. “We made a lot of mistakes tonight - and that won't happen again - but we opened some eyes with how we played.”
Offensively, Abbey Kiger (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) led the charge for Thiel with a 15-kill night, while Megan Kay (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) chipped in seven. Kiger also fired two aces to match sophomore libero Stephanie Shipley (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).
Madison Chylik (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) set the pace for assists with 31.
Shipley's 15 digs was tops for the Blue and Gold, while Danielle Dwyer (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) and Kay registered 11 and 10, respectively.
The Tomcats will attempt to regroup this Saturday as they participate in the Westminster Tri-match, facing the league-leading Titans at 1 p.m. and Grove City at 3 p.m. Thiel has already beaten their in-county rival two times this season.
