GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 23) -- The Thiel College men's basketball was handed a 72-54 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) defeat by Grove City College Wednesday evening at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Grove City's (11-6, 5-1) Shawn Carr led all scorers with his 19 point, six rebound effort. Luke Tomaselli added 11 points off of the bench while Andy O'Keefe chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds. The Wolverines shot 51.0 percent (25-49) from the floor and 57.9 percent (11-19) from three-point range. The visitors also finished with a 28-26 edge on the glass. Grove City hit on 7-of-10 three-pointers in the opening half.
Freshman forward Tommy Hall (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell) (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell) led the Tomcats (6-9, 2-4) with 18 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore guard Nick Sefcsik (Allison Park/Shaler) added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists while senior forward Joe Herrmann (Hartstown/Jamestown) (Hartstown/Jamestown) finished with nine points and four rebounds. Thiel shot 45.2 percent (19-42) from the floor and just 35.0 percent (7-20) from three-point range.
Sefcsik's three with 16:48 remaining in the opening period tied the game at 5-5. With Grove City up five, 17-12, with just under 11 minutes to go before the break, the Wolverines strung together a 13-4 run to grab a 30-16 advantage. The Wolverines went into the half leading 35-23.
A 9-0 run to start the second by the Wolverines extended their lead to 21, 44-23, with just under 18 minutes remaining. The visitors were able to stretch their second half lead to as many as 25 (47-72) before exiting with the 18-point win.
Thiel returns to PAC action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when it travels to Waynesburg University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
