GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 16) -- The Thiel College men's basketball team finished with five players in double figures as they defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Westminster College 93-79 Wednesday evening at Beeghly Gymnasium. Leading the charge for the Tomcats was senior forward
Joe Herrmann (Hartstown/Jamestown) (Hartstown/Jamestown), who finished with 22 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win, snapping a four-game losing skid against the Titans.
Thiel (6-7, 2-3), who had dropped five straight prior to Wednesday's win, shot 53.3 percent (35-58) from the floor and finished with a 41-27 advantage on the glass. Freshman guard Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./George Junior Republic) (Philadelphia/George Junior Republic) added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists while junior forward Keebo Dowe (Martinsburg, W. Va./Edison Twp.) (Martinsburg, W. Va./Edison Twp.) chipped in with a career-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore guard Nick Sefcsik (Allison Park/Shaler) added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists while freshman forward Tommy Hall (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell) (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell) and junior guard Brandon Mirizio (West Middlesex/Kennedy Catholic) (West Middlesex/Kennedy Catholic) each added 10.
Westminster's (3-12, 1-4) Ryne Murray finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals to lead the Titans. Craig Hannon totaled 21 points and six steals while David Richards and Chauncey Whitlow finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Titan finished the game shooting 43.8 percent (28-64) from the floor and 34.4 percent (11-32) from three-point range.
The Tomcats built their first half lead to as many as 10 (42-32) prior to the Titans finishing on a 9-2 run to close out the period and cut the lead to three, 44-41, going into the half.
Thiel, up just five (56-51) with 14:34 remaining, used a 16-7 run covering the next 5:09 to grab a 72-58 lead with 9:25 to play. The Tomcats were able to stretch their lead to as many as 19 (85-66) before posting the 14-point victory.
Thiel will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when it travels to Geneva College. Tip off i scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
