Andre’ Smith is in his second season as an assistant with the men's basketball program.
Prior to joining Coach Loomis’ staff Andre', a native of Indianapolis, Ind., was an assistant with the women's team at Thiel for two seasons. He assisted head coach Artina Trader’s program and helped the Tomcats reach the second round of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament in 2004-05. This past season he helped guide the Tomcats to a third-place regular-season finish and host a first-round playoff contest.
During the summer of 2005 Smith was the head coach and general manager of the Mahoning Valley Wildcats, a professional basketball team in the International Basketball League (IBL). Smith coached three all-star selections with one of them being a league M.V.P. candidate. He has also been the head coach of a European professional team for two years compiling a record of 45-10.
Prior to his coaching stints in the professional ranks and at Thiel, Smith was an assistant men's basketball coach at Youngstown State University for two seasons (1997-1999) under current Ohio State University assistant coach Dan Peters. Smith helped guide the Penguins to a 20-win season in 1997 and reached the conference tournament championship, eventually falling to Valparaiso University. The following season the Penguins advanced to the conference tournament semifinals, putting together the school's first back-to-back winning seasons in over 10 years and the school’s first-ever 20-win season.
Smith embarked on his coaching career after graduating from Youngstown State University with a bachelor's degree in education. Smith played at Lake Land Community College (Mattoon, Ill.) for two seasons (1991-1993) where he averaged 27.6 points during his sophomore season, finishing as the fourth-leading JUCO scorer in the nation and earn JUCO all-American second team honors. He was listed by ESPN NCAA HOOPS as one of the top junior college players moving on. Smith continued his career at Youngstown State where he lead the team in scoring, steals, and assists both seasons. He was placed on the all-newcomer team for the Mid-Continent Conference and was team M.V.P. both seasons while earning player of the month and player of the week several times.
Smith went on to have professional basketball stints in the countries of Denmark, Germany, Holland and in the United States with the CBA and USBL.
Smith resides in Youngstown, Ohio with his seven-year old son, Andre' Jr.
