Gonzalez '25 named Men's Volleyball assistant coach

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Aug. 8) -- Thiel College Men's Volleyball Head Coach Henry Gorton announced the hiring of David Gonzalez '25 as assistant coach on Friday morning.

Gonzalez was a four-year member of the Tomcats' men's volleyball team and served as a team captain during the 2025 season, when the Blue and Gold captured the first-ever Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship and earned the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.

"I'm thrilled to have David on the staff as my assistant coach," Gorton said. "David's experience and passion for the program, coupled with his love for the game and championship mentality, make him an excellent fit for the role as we look to build on last season's PAC championship and reach greater heights."

An All-PAC Honorable Mention selection in 2025, Gonzalez spent his first three seasons as an outside hitter before transitioning to libero for his senior year. He received 710 serves and was aced just 21 times. Defensively, he ranked third on the team with 171 digs.

"It's a great honor to return to Thiel and stay within the men's volleyball program," Gonzalez said. "The standard here is excellence, and we're coming in hungry to defend our PAC title and bring another championship home to Thiel."

Gonzalez concluded his playing career ranked eighth in program history in digs (477) and sets played (334), and seventh in matches played (106). He appeared in all 111 sets during the 2025 season, the third-most in a single season in program history.

In addition to his role as assistant coach at Thiel, Gonzalez was recently named the head girls volleyball coach at Warren JFK High School in Warren, Ohio.

He graduated from Thiel this past spring with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, along with minors in Coaching and Philosophy.

The Tomcats posted a program-record 22 wins during the 2025 season, going a perfect 12-0 in regular-season conference play on their way to the PAC championship and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance. Thiel also set new program marks for overall winning percentage (.759), conference winning percentage (1.000), and home victories (10). The Blue and Gold strung together a 15-match winning streak—the longest in program history—from Feb. 18 - April 12.
