King advances to day 2 of Region 4 Wrestling Championships

DANVILLE, Va. (Feb. 28) -- Thiel College 197-pound Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion Joey King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) advanced to day two of the NCAA Division III Region 4 Wrestling Championships Friday evening at Grant Center on the campus of Averett University.

King logged a pair of pins in the consolation bracket over Washington and Jefferson's Connor Garren (2:40) and Averett's Jacob Jimenez (1:54) to improve to 16-3 on the year with 10 wins by way of fall. He will go up against Ferrum's Sam Slate in his first bout tomorrow.

King will need to finish third tomorrow in order to be Thiel's first national qualifier since current assistant coach Gage Gladysz '20 did so in 2019.

King was pinned (6:41) in his first bout of the day for his first on-the-mat loss of the season at 197 pounds. King's other loss on the year at 197 was a forfeit.

Seth Phillips (Hubbard, Ohio/Western Reserve), the back-to-back-to-back 285-pound PAC champion, pinned Shenandoah's Bryan Guzman (3:38) in his first bout before dropping a 10-1 major decision to Mount Union's Steven Marra. Phillips was pinned (4:13) in his final collegiate bout by Baldwin Wallace's Andrew Vanscoy.

Phillips concludes his senior campaign with a 15-8 mark and eight pins.

Tomorrow's action will get under way at 11 a.m.
