GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 29) -- The Thiel College wrestling team downed Hiram College 39-14 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday evening on Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium.
The Tomcats rise to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in league play while Hiram drops to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Blue and Gold jumped to a 6-0 lead after
EJ McCarthy (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) picked up his third pin of the year (2:02) over Ian Fuentes to improve to 6-8 on the year. The lead grew to 12-0 after Hiram forfeited at 133 pounds.
Chase Kyler (Sheffield, Pa./Sheffield) pushed the lead to 15-0 after he logged a 9-7 decision over Will Brodbeck. Kyler now sits at 5-8 on the year after logging his first win via decision on the season.
Hiram got on the board with a pin at 149 and a decision at 157 to make it 15-8.
Landon Mead (Clarendon, Pa./Sheffield) had an impressive win at 165 over Seth Holt. Mead trailed 9-5 with seconds remaining in the third period. He forced a 3-point take down as the horn sounded and added an additional point on riding time to force overtime where he got a fall (8:07) to make it 21-8 Tomcats.
Mead's win was his third of the year, all of which have come via pin.
Thiel won the final three bouts of the night with a forfeit at 184, a
Joey King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) pin (2:02) at 197 and a
Seth Phillips (Hubbard, Ohio/Western Reserve) pin (1:36) at heavyweight to clinch the 39-14 win.
King improves to 12-2 on the year and logged his fourth pin. Phillips rises to 6-4 with his third fall of the year.
Wrestling returns to action Friday for a 7 p.m. non-conference dual at Penn State Behrend.
