WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 22) -- The Thiel College wrestling team downed Waynesburg University 32-24 Wednesday evening at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) dual.
The Tomcats move to 1-2 (1-1) on the year while the Yellow Jackets drop to 3-12 (0-3).
The dual came down to the heavyweight bout as Thiel held a slim 26-24 lead.
Seth Phillips (Hubbard, Ohio/Western Reserve) picked up a fall (1:47) over Jaron Polk to clinch the contest for Thiel. The win was Phillips first of the season.
Thiel jumped to a quick 12-0 lead to begin the night as
EJ McCarthy (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) (125 pounds) and
Dreyvin Livingston (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) (133) won via forfeit.
Thiel extended the lead to 17-0 as
Chase Kyler (Sheffield, Pa./Sheffield) logged a 27-7 technical fall over Conner Graser. Kyler moves to 3-6 on the year with all three of his wins coming via tech. fall.
The Blue and Gold went ahead 20-0 as
Jacob Potts (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) logged a 12-6 decision over JT Hollyfield. The win was Potts' third on the season.
Waynesburg got back into the dual and went ahead 24-20 as they picked up a pair of medical forfeits at 157 and 174 along with a Jessie Orbin tech. fall at 184 and an injury win at 165.
Joey King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) got a win by forfeit at 197 to put Thiel back up 26-24.
Thiel returns to action at the D. Kenneth Ober Invitational in Elizabethtown, Pa., Saturday.
