GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College wrestling team lost a non-conference match Tuesday at Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium to the Penn State Behrend Lions, 24-23.
 
The Lions edged the Tomcats on Criteria C for having two pins compared to Thiel's one pin.
 
Thiel took a 9-0 lead after winning at 125 and 133. EJ McCarthy (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) defeated Ja'Shad Bumpers by major decision (11-2) at 125 while Evan Whiteside (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) won by technical fall (20-4, 7:00) over Cole Neil at 133.
 
Behrend went on to win four straight bouts to take a 20-9 lead.
 
Thiel tied the score (20-20) after Frank Gill (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and Jared Curcio (Avonmore, Pa./Kiski Area) won at 174 and 184, respectively. Gill defeated Ryan Gildersleeve by technical fall (19-4, 7:00) while Curcio pinned Matthew Melchior (1:06).
 
Matthew Caldwell gave the Lions a 23-20 lead when he won by decision at 197. Seth Phillips (Hubbard, Ohio/Western Reserve) won by decision (4-1) at 285, but the Lions earned the extra team point on Criteria C.
 
The Tomcats will compete in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships at Washington & Jefferson College on Friday, Feb. 16. The event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
