GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats' men's lacrosse team defeated the Franciscan Barons, 12-10, Friday evening in a non-conference matchup.
The Tomcats struck first with a goal just 1:36 into the game. The Barons responded, scoring two goals to take a 2-1 lead with 8:18 left in the first quarter. Thiel then began a run, scoring five unanswered goals through the beginning of the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead. The teams traded goals to go into the half with a 7-3 Tomcats' lead.
In the second half, Franciscan cut into Thiel's lead, outscoring the Tomcats 4-3 in the third quarter to cut Thiel's lead to 10-7. Early in the fourth quarter, the Barons scored two straight goals to make it a one goal game. In the final 10 minutes,
Bennett Medyn (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra Macedon) and
Dan Senisi (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) scored two insurance goals as the Tomcats went on to win 12-10.
For the Tomcats,
Bennett Medyn (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra Macedon) led the game with four goals. Medyn also added five groundballs.
Jeffrey Karnoff (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and
Pat Hartnett (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) both notched multiple goals (two and three, respectively) and multiple assists (both with two). Karnoff finished with four groundballs as well.
Selom Kalin-Samlan (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) recorded two goals and an assist.
Sheldon Bourdeau (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) tied the team lead with five groundballs. Goalkeeper
Jason Masciantonio (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) moved to 2-0 on the season in a complete game effort with 11 saves.
For the Barons, Daniel Clayton and Gavin Cook recorded three goals apiece. Cook also finished with three assists. Luke Barnes led the team with five groundballs. Goalkeeper Micah Eby notched 22 saves.
The Tomcats will look to stay undefeated as they travel to Westminster to take on the Titans in a non-conference contest. The game is scheduled for Sunday, March 21 at noon.
