Tomcats advance to championship game at Buffalo State Invite

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Thiel College women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Friday as they defeated Cazenovia College 71-60 in the first round of the Betty Abgott Invitational hosted by Buffalo State University.

The Tomcats had two players score over 20 points in the non-conference win as senior Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) scored a game-high 23 points and freshman Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, M.D./Western) poured in a career-high 22 points and 15 rebounds for her second straight double-double.

Thiel jumped out to a 20-12 first quarter lead and went into halftime leading 35-24. A 23 point third quarter from the Wildcats put Cazenovia up two headed to the fourth. A three-pointer from Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire) to open the fourth put Thiel ahead five with 9:05 remaining. Breckenridge collected 10 points in the win to make it three straight games the freshman has reached double figures. Thiel would close out Cazenovia in the final minutes to take the game 71-60.
