GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats went 1-1 Friday at the 10^th Annual Mel Berry Duals. The Tomcats were defeated by the ninth-ranked Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets (48-0) but rebounded with a win over the Mercyhurst North East Saints (35-10).
 
After falling to the Yellow Jackets, the ninth-ranked team in Division III according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), the Tomcats won all but two bouts against the Saints.
 
Between forfeit wins by Jaread Prude (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) (125) and Vincent Mion (Mount Oliver, Pa./Carrick) (141), Justin Walter (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) (133) picked up six team points when he pinned North East's John Coward in 2:15. Austin Bonacci (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) (157) and Chris Nuss (West Homestead, Pa/Central Catholic) (165) both won by decision.
 
Gage Gladysz (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) (197) picked up a win by technical fall over North East's Ian Wagner (17-0, 3:30) before Alexander Streich (Warren, Pa./Warren) (285) finished the event with a pin over Cornell Wilson (4:02).
 
A freshman, Gladysz also suffered a narrow defeat (5-4) to Baldwin Wallace's Tyler Maclellan, who is listed as a "contender" at 197 pounds according to the most recent rankings by d3wrestle.com.
 
The Tomcats will return to action Friday, Jan. 27 when they host the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets at Beeghly Gymnasium. The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
