WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Thiel College women's tennis team earned their first win of the season defeating the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, 7-2 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match Tuesday afternoon.
The Tomcats opened the match by sweeping the Yellow Jackets in doubles action. The senior tandem of
Sara Matczak (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and
Lauren Wolfe (Anita, Pa./Punxsutawney) picked up an 8-6 win in No. 1 doubles over Adrienne Brown and Heidi Evans. In other doubles action, the freshman duo of
Shyann Foreman (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) and
Angela Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) toughed out a 9-7 win in No. 2 doubles over Wendy Wall and Liz Ensminger while
Mercedez Quarles (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland School of Science and Medicine) and
Kaela Reinhart (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) cruised to an 8-4 victory in No. 3 doubles.
The Tomcats continued the momentum into singles action to secure the victory. Matzcak, Campbell and Quarles each notched two-set sweeps in their respective matches. After dropping the first set to Noelle Hughes in No. 6 singles,
Marquett Samuels (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) rifled off two consecutive set victories to win the match in three sets.
The Tomcats will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Beaver Falls, Pa. to take on the Geneva Golden Tornadoes in a PAC contest starting at 3:30 p.m.
