CRESSON, Pa. – The Thiel College women's tennis team opened the 2014 season Friday with a 7-2 win over the Mount Aloysius Mounties.
 
Four Tomcats picked up two wins on the day, including Shay Kashey (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), Lauren Mittner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton), Emily Carlton (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) and Nicole Carlton (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch).
 
Kashey and Mittner teamed up to earn an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over Brittany Johnson and Laura Stahli. Kashey also defeated Johnson at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5, while Mittner shut out Leah Stoehr at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
 
Emily and Nicole Carlton (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) defeated Felicia Phillips and Afton Dunkle at No. 3 doubles, 8-1. Emily Carlton (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) topped Dunkle at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-3, while Nicole Carlton (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) defeated Phillips at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
 
Tomcats Sara Matczak (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and Lauren Wolfe (Anita, Pa./Punxsutawney) also teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Loreal Housler and Stoehr.
 
Thiel's women's tennis team will play its home opener Tuesday against Fredonia State University. The match is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
