Golden Tornadoes edge Tomcats

Thiel second baseman Ashley Dolan recorded four hits in two games Wednesday against Geneva.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Thiel softball team lost a pair of close Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games on the road Wednesday to the Geneva Golden Tornadoes.

Geneva won the first game of the conference doubleheader 4-2 before holding on to win 6-5 in the second contest.

Thiel held a 2-0 lead in the first game. Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) knocked in the first run on an RBI-double in the first inning. Ashley Guillory (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) doubled Thiel's lead to 2-0 in the second frame when she notched an infield RBI-single.

The Golden Tornadoes eked out a run in the third and another run in the fifth to tie up the contest. The difference in the game was Laura Beck's walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, which lifted the Golden Tornadoes to the 4-2 win.

Cheek led the Tomcats in Game 1 with three hits and an RBI in four at-bats.

Samantha Johnson earned the win for Geneva. She allowed two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking two. Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) took the loss. She allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking one.

Geneva jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game, but Thiel chipped away at the lead in the fifth when Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch)'s sacrifice fly to right field allowed Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) to score. The Golden Tornadoes went on to pick up another run in the fifth, taking a 6-1 lead over the Tomcats.

The Tomcats attempted a late comeback in the seventh, scoring four runs in the process. Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) had the key hit in the inning, a 2-RBI single to center field. Bailey Ahern (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) and Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) also recorded RBIs in the seventh.

Trailing by just a run with two outs in the seventh, the Tomcats had a chance to tie up the game or win it in regulation with the bases loaded. However, Johnson, who threw all 14 innings for the Tornadoes Wednesday, got the Tomcats' final batter to pop up to first base to end the threat.

Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) went 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game. Auxier went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Massengill went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Johnson allowed five runs, two of which were earned, in the second game on nine hits. She struck out five without allowing a walk.

The Tomcats (12-20, 5-11 PAC) will close out the season Saturday when they host the Grove City Wolverines at Tomcat Park. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
