GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College wrestling team moved from unranked to ranked No. 14 in Division III, according to the most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings.
In addition to the Tomcats being ranked No. 14 in the nation, All-American Jake Lowry was ranked first at 197 pounds, according to the most recent NWCA rankings. He was previously ranked second in his weight class.
The No. 14 ranking is the highest for the Tomcats in
Craig Thurber's 12-year tenure as head coach.
"It's nice being ranked 14
th in the country," Thurber said. "It's a tribute to the guys and how hard they are working. We just hope to keep getting better and stay healthy."
The Tomcats upset the then 11
th-ranked Mount Union Purple Raiders 26-5 on Nov. 12. Thiel finished fifth at the Washington & Jefferson College Invitational on Nov. 8, where senior
Brandon Collins (Hadley, Pa./Commodore Perry) (165) won an individual championship. The Tomcats also competed in the Mount Union Invitational on Nov. 15, where
Jerrold Roosa (Randolph, N.Y./Randolph Central) earned a third-place finish in the 184-pound bracket and three other Tomcats placed in the top six in their weight classes.
The 14
th-ranked Tomcats (1-0) will participate in the Mount Union Duals this Saturday, Nov. 22. Thiel will wrestle 18
th-ranked York College at 11 a.m. before facing John Carroll at 1 p.m. Thiel will face second-ranked Messiah College at 3 p.m. before taking on Lycoming College at 5 p.m.
