WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Thiel wrestling team was edged 18-15 by Waynesburg University, Friday, in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action.
Thiel and Waynesburg each won five bouts on the night, but the Jackets scored a crucial six points by pin at 174 pounds to capture the dual win.
Freshman
Vince Vahaly (Bentleyville, Pa./Bentworth) posted a shutout, 3-0 win over Gordan Bieber at 125 pounds. Vahaly now boasts a 17-11 overall record. It was the first of three wins for Thiel, as sophomore
Nick Sutton (Butler, Pa./Butler) made a strong debut at 133-pounds with a 5-1 win over Filippo Crivelli, and freshman
Robert Ritschard (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) staked the Tomcats to a 9-0 lead with 7-3 win over Jake Vitolo.
Waynesburg won the next five bouts to take an 18-9 lead in the dual.
Junior
Jacob Lowry (Smithfield, Pa./Albert Gallatin) got Thiel back on the winning track, as he extended his season-long winning streak to 25 matches with a 6-0 win over Patrick Jennings at 197-pounds.
Sophomore heavyweight
Blake Heim (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) posted the final win for the Tomcats, a 2-1 decision over Greg Kumer, but it would not be enough to catch the Jackets in the dual score.
Up next, Thiel heads to Baldwin Wallace University to take part in the 28
th annual John Summa Memorial Tournament on February 8
th. The tournament field features nine teams, including PAC foes W&J and Waynesburg.
