Thiel Wrestlers finish 2-1 at Mel Berry Duals

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College wrestling team posted a 2-1 record at the 2014 Mel Berry Duals Friday night.

The 24^th-ranked Tomcats disposed of Mercyhurst North East (29-19) and Lycoming (29-11) in convincing fashion, while Thiel's stiffest tilt of the night came in the form of a 22-14 setback at the hands of the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets.

While there were many bright spots for the Tomcats throughout the evening, Thiel's Jordan Powell (Hadley, Pa./Commodore Perry) and Jacob Lowry (Smithfield, Pa./Albert Gallatin) turned in some of the brightest.

Powell went a perfect 3-0 to improve his record to 14-4. The 174-pound, returning All-American began his night by defeating Mercyhurst North East's Alex Svetz by major decision, 11-3. The Hadley, Pa. native followed that win by posting an 8-6 overtime decision over Ben Lebrun of Baldwin Wallace and capped off his night by sticking Willie Alford of Lycoming at the 6:16 mark.

Lowry ran his undefeated streak to 23 matches with relative ease- as he tallied a pair of technical fall victories Friday night. The Albert Gallatin high school product thumped Paul Rallis of Baldwin Wallace, 16-0, and cruised to a 16-1 win over Skyler Ebner of Lycoming.

Four wrestlers and their parents were honored prior to the game during Senior Night. Seniors honored included: Ryan Carson (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), Mark Douglass (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield), Ryan Murphy (Wattsburg, Pa./Seneca) and Brett Smith.

Thiel (11-6) returns to action – and conference play – when it hosts Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday. Wrestling gets underway at 7 p.m.
