No.24 Thiel Wrestling team set to host 7th annual Mel Berry Duals Friday

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The 24th-ranked Thiel College wrestling team highlights a group of four teams that will head to Beeghly Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 24, for the Seventh Annual Mel Berry Duals hosted by Thiel College.

The event will also act as senior day for the Tomcats, as Thiel's three seniors - Ryan Carson (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), Ryan Murphy (Wattsburg, Pa./Seneca) and Mark Douglass (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) - will be honored 10 minutes prior to the start of wrestling, at 5 p.m.

Thiel, ranked 24th in the nation, will begin the night by wrestling the Mercyhurst North East Saints on mat one at 5 p.m. Lycoming College and Baldwin Wallace University round out the four-team field, as the two teams will face off at 5 p.m. on mat two.

At 6:30 p.m., Thiel will welcome Baldwin Wallace to mat one, while the Saints and the Warriors of Lycoming will tangle on mat two.

Before the final round of matches at 8 p.m., the Tomcats will honor all Thiel wrestling alumni in attendance. The Tomcats will then close out the duals by taking on Lycoming on mat one, while Baldwin Wallace and Mercyhurst North East will tussle on mat two.

Thiel features one of its most balanced lineups in some time, thanks to an influx of two freshmen starters along with a solid core of returners. All 10 Tomcat starters have winning percentages above .500, including freshman Chris Nuss (West Homestead, Pa/Central Catholic) (149 pounds, 19-9) and junior Jake Lowry (197, 21-0).

In addition, sophomore Nick Sutton (Butler, Pa./Butler) (141, 15-9), returning All-American junior Jordan Powell (Hadley, Pa./Commodore Perry) (174, 11-4), junior Jerrold Roosa (Randolph, N.Y./Randolph Central) (184, 17-6) and sophomore Blake Heim (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) (285, 12-5) are all also enjoying solid starts to the season.

The Tomcats and 11th-year head coach Craig Thurber hold a .782 career winning percentage (18-5) at their home dual meet, including a perfect 3-0 showing in 2013.

The Seventh Annual Mel Berry Duals will begin at 5 p.m. Friday.
