Women’s Basketball drops PAC contest to Westminster

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team got a double-double effort from sophomore forward Jaclyn Watkins (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa), but it wasn't enough as the home team fell to the Westminster Titans, 56-47 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Monday.

After Westminster (7-6, 4-2) scored the first two field goals of the game to begin the contest on a 7-2 run, the Tomcats went on a 6-0 run of their own, as a layup by sophomore forward Hannah Stoneman (Sugarcreek, Ohio/Hiland) gave Thiel their first lead, 8-7. Unfortunately for the home team, the Titans were able to rebuild a ten-point lead down the stretch of the opening period and took a 29-19 lead into the halftime break.

During the second half, Thiel cut Westminster's lead in half with a pair of free throws by freshman forward Jessica Lovell (Washington, Pa./Trinity), that trimmed Thiel's deficit down to four. However, the visiting team fired back with a basket of their own, upping their lead back to six, 40-34 with 9:12 to play in regulation.

The Tomcats were able to inch closer as the final minutes wore on, as a three-pointer by senior guard Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Early College) made it 40-39 Westminster. However, that was as close as Thiel could get, as the Titans continued to have an answer each time the Tomcats got to within a possession of the lead to seal the PAC win.

As previously mentioned, Watkins led the charge for the Tomcats, scoring 12 points and grabbing ten rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Hines chipped in ten points during the losing effort, while also dishing out a team-high three assists.

Courtney Zitt went for a game-high 13 points on five-of-15 shooting from the floor. She added three rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the win.

Thiel returns to action on Wednesday, as the Tomcats host the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
