GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Thiel College women's tennis team hosted Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Chatham University Saturday, for its Breast Cancer Awareness match. The Tomcats won the match, 8-1, in front of one of their largest crowds to date.
The Tomcats (3-6, 2-5) opened up a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping doubles play against the Cougars (1-7, 1-7).Â
Shay Kashey (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane)Â andÂ
Lauren Mittner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) defeated Kelly Nestman and Lauren Trichtinger by forfeit at No. 1 doubles while freshmenÂ
Sara Matczak (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and
Hanna Tegel (Cleveland, Ohio/Westlake)Â followed with an 9-8 (7-5) win over Shireen Ghaznavi and Kristi Hruska at No. 2 doubles.

Another pair of freshmen,Â
Sara Matczak (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and Lauren Wolfe (Anita, Pa./Punxsutawney), teamed up to defeat Caroline Lafferty and Merissa Clark in the third doubles match, 8-3.

The Tomcats went on to win the next five singles matches to tally the 8-1 victory. Kashey defeated Ghaznavi 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot whileÂ
Mittner topped Trichtinger 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at number two singles.

A pair of Tomcats clinched berths to the PAC Championships on Saturday, as Matczak and Carlton both did so with wins at number three and four singles, respectively. Matczak downed Hruska 6-0, 6-1 while Carlton defeated Lafferty 7-5, 6-2. Tegel rounded out the scoring for Thiel, securing a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sherpa at number five singles.
The Tomcats are back in action on Oct. 1, when they host Waynesburg University in a PAC showdown. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.Â
