BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Thiel College women's tennis team won their second match of the season Wednesday, defeating host Medaille College 7-2 in non-conference play.
The Tomcats opened up a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping doubles play against the Mavericks.
Shay Kashey (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) and
Lauren Mittner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) defeated Liz Barrett and Sarah Block 8-3 in the No. 1 doubles slot while freshmen
Sara Matczak (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and
Emily Carlton (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) followed with an 8-4 win over Emily Insinna and Kyla Krathaus at No. 2 doubles.
Another pair of freshmen,
Lauren Wolfe (Anita, Pa./Punxsutawney) and
Hanna Tegel (Cleveland, Ohio/Westlake), teamed up to defeat Courtney Kopper and Erin Rollins in the third doubles match, 8-4.
The Tomcats went on to win four of six singles matches to earn the 7-2 win. Matczak defeated Block 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 2 slot while
Emily Carlton (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) topped Insinna 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 slot.
Wolfe and Sandy Rodehaver also won their singles matches. Wolfe downed Rollins 6-4, 6-4 while Rodehaver defeated Kopper 2-6, 6-4, (12-10).
The Tomcats (2-5) will return to action Friday when they travel to Washington, Pa., to take on Washington & Jefferson College at 3:30 p.m.
