BETHANY, W.Va. – The Thiel College Tomcats earned their first PAC victory of the season Friday with a 9-0 sweep over the Bethany Bison at the Mary Ewing Tennis Center on the Bethany College campus.
The Tomcats swept the Bison in doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the match.
Lauren Mittner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) and
Shay Kashey (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles while freshmen
Emily Carlton (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) and
Hanna Tegel (Cleveland, Ohio/Westlake) won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Another pair of freshmen,
Sara Matczak (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and
Lauren Wolfe (Anita, Pa./Punxsutawney), also earned an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
All six of Thiel's doubles players also earned wins in singles play. Kashey defeated Allison Snyder 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at the No. 1 slot while Mittner topped Katie Vallone, 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 3 slot, Matczak defeated Sarah Thrall, 6-1, 6-1.
Carlton downed Jordan Jones at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Tegel and Amber Ridings played a close match at the No. 5 spot, but Tegel came out on top, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Wolfe closed out the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kaitlyn Tate in the No. 6 singles match.
The Tomcats (1-4, 1-3 PAC) will return to action Saturday when they travel to Latrobe, Pa., to take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
