Barzak, Muffley key Thiel’s 75-65 win over Grove City

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) and Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) saved some of their best for last. The pair of seniors, who were honored before the game, each recorded a double-double to propel the Thiel Tomcats to a 75-65 victory over the Grove City Wolverines Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium.
 
With the win the Tomcats finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-17 and 7-11 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Seventh-seeded Thiel will travel to Latrobe, Pa., Tuesday to take on the second-seeded Saint Vincent Bearcats (19-6, 15-3 PAC) in the first round of the 2013 PAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
The Tomcats never trailed in the game after Barzak scored on a layup on her team's first possession. Thiel led by 10 points on three occasions in the second half.
 
Barzak led Thiel on offense with 29 points. She also pulled down 13 rebounds. Muffley scored 17 points and also grabbed 13 rebounds. Guard Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Early College) also chipped in with 14 points, which was her highest single-game point total of the season.
 
Leah Gibson paced the Wolverines with 20 points while Kathryn Erbelding recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Also for Grove City, Mary McDonald scored 18 points.
