Thiel Wrestling goes 3-1 at Mount Union Duals

ALLIANCE, OHIO – The #23 Thiel College wrestling team finished 3-1 at the Mount Union Duals Saturday afternoon at the Peterson Fieldhouse. The Tomcats posted wins over Gettysburg College, York College and John Carroll University. Thiel's lone loss came against #5 Messiah College in their third match of the dual tournament format.

Thiel cruised to a 40-6 win over Gettysburg in their first match of the day. The Tomcats grabbed an early 12-0 lead, thanks to a pair of forfeits at 125 and 133. At 149, Jordan Smith (Olean, N.Y./Portville Central) picked up a 6-1 decision over Brandon Carcuffe. Marco Crivelli (Clinton, Pa./Hopewell) recorded the first of three pins, sticking Collin Furth at the 2:01 mark at 165, while Tyler Wilkes (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) posted a 10-1 major decision against Manny Markantone at 174. Jerrold Roosa (Randolph, N.Y./Randolph Central) continued to stay unbeaten on the season with win by pin (1:53) over Pat Thomas at 184. Shawn Reynolds (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) (197) posted the final pin of the match, taking down Michael Sheehan in just 25 seconds. Tyler Hendzel (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) picked up a 6-4 decision over Nick Diunizio at 285 to close out the win for Thiel.

In a 28-16 victory over York, Thiel notched six wins, including three pins and one major decision. Vince Vahaly (Bentleyville, Pa./Bentworth) (125) and Jordan Powell (Hadley, Pa./Commodore Perry) (174) both scored decision wins. In the loss against #5 Messiah (21-15), Nuss scored the first points for Thiel at 149, claiming a 10-5 win by decision over Greg Kabakjian. Sean Byham (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) followed with a 7-0 decision over Kalaan Washington at 157. The Tomcats won three of the final four matches, as Powell, Lowry and Heim all posted wins by decision. Heim's 4-3 win by decision over Charles Jones at 285 was particularly impressive, as Jones is listed as the first "contender" to be ranked at 285 in d3wrestle.com's weekly rankings.

In the 26-9 win over John Carroll, Thiel scored seven wins including a pin from Heim, and a pair of wins by major decision from Nuss and Lowry. Lance Waters (Abingdon, Md./John Carroll) (133) and Nick Sutton (Butler, Pa./Butler) (141) each posted wins in the victory over John Carroll, while Powell and Rossa notched wins by decision.

Powell, Nuss, Lowry and Heim all went a perfect 3-0 at the duals.
