LATROBE, Pa. – Despite a second half run by the Tomcats that tied the game with seven minutes to play, the Saint Vincent College Bearcats overcame Thiel College, 75-69, in men's basketball Wednesday night.
Down by 12 points with just four minutes to play in the first half, sophomore
Kamran McCaskill (Carol City, Fla./Miami Beach) kicked off a Tomcats' 7-0 run with a three-pointer.
Eric Mallinger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and
R.J. Brownlee (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) each hit a free throw and
A.J. Forbes (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Pompano Beach) knocked down a jumper to pull Thiel within striking distance at the half, 27-22.
The two teams battled evenly throughout most of the second half, with a layup by
R.J. Brownlee (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) giving the Tomcats a 49-47 lead with 6:43 remaining. The Bearcats had an answer, as they went on a 10-0 run, culminating in a 57-49 deficit for the visiting Tomcats with just 5:11 minutes remaining.
A pair of
Anthony Harvey (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) free-throws got the Tomcats to within five with just 32 seconds to play, but that was as close as Thiel could get, with Saint Vincent's Chris Klimchock sinking two free-throws seconds later to seal the win for the Bearcats.
Thiel had four players reach double-digit scoring totals, led by Harvey and Brownlee with 11 points apiece. McCaskill and
Ladell Trotty (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East) each added 10 points.
Issac Turner paced the Bearcats (15-5, 10-1) with 21 points.
Thiel (10-8, 7-5) returns to action on Saturday when they host the Bethany Bison. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
