Winning streak ends at three games

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped Saturday with a 73-67 road loss to the W&J Presidents.
 
Thiel held a 10-point lead (24-14) with a little over eight minutes remaining in the first half after senior guard Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) made a pair of shots from the charity stripe. However, the Presidents used a 15-4 run over the next six-plus minutes to take a 29-28 lead. W&J went on to lead at the half, 33-28.
 
The two teams went back-and-forth in the second half, which featured four ties and four lead changes. W&J finally took the lead for good with 3:36 left in regulation on a jump shot by Chelsea Apke.
 
Muffley led the Tomcats with 25 points on a 9-for-16 day from the floor. She also recorded eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Muffley moved into sixth place on the Thiel College women's basketball all-time career points with her 25-point game, surpassing Penny Aits (1980-84). Muffley currently has 1,125 career points.
 
Senior Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) scored 18 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal while freshman forward Jaclyn Watkins scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
 
Apke led the Presidents with 21 points and nine rebounds. Valerie Dunlap scored 17 points with seven rebounds while Emily Abraham scored 13 points.
 
The Tomcats (5-14, 4-8 PAC) will try to get back on track Wednesday when they travel to Latrobe, Pa., to take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats who are currently in second place in the PAC. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
