The Tomcat women's tennis program notched its first victory of the young season by beating Daemen College 6-3 at the second annual Thiel College Invitational. The victory came after rebounding from a 6-3 loss at the hands of Pitt-Greensburg earlier in the day.
In the game against Daemen, the Wildcats took two out of three from the Tomcats in doubles play, but Thiel was able to rally, taking five of the six singles matches to get the program's first victory of 2012.
Lauren Mittner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) won both of her matches, as she won 6-0, 6-2 at number two singles and teamed up with
Shay Kashey (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) to defeat Daemen's number one doubles team, 8-2.
Liz Moir (Brentwood, Pa./Baldwin),
Sandy Rodeheaver (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), Mercedez Quarles and
Tyler Fleming (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) all picked up victories in singles play for the Tomcats.
The first game of the day pitted Thiel against University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg. The Tomcats dropped the game 6-3.
Lauren Mittner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) again came up big for the Tomcats, as she won both of her games in the match. The first was at number one doubles where she and her partner,
Shay Kashey (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), defeated Maria Iovino and Cayla Ray 8-0. The second win for Mittner came at number two singles where she defeated Ashley Uncapher 6-1, 6-0. The doubles team of Moir and Rodeheaver added the third and final victory for the Tomcats.
Thiel will open up conference play on Wednesday September 12 at home when they will take on the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
