GREENVILLE, Pa. –
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) made the most of her senior day recognition Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Gymnasium as she notched her fourth double-double of the season and helped lead the Tomcats to a thrilling 63-59 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over cross county rival Grove City College.
Davis totaled 19 points and a season-high 13 rebounds as she connected on 8-of-18 field goals.
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) tied a season high with her 26-point effort while adding seven rebounds and three blocks.
Thiel finished with a 44-34 advantage on the glass and finished the season plus-17 in its two-game sweep of Grove City.
The win for Thiel is the program's eighth conference victory of the season, the most since the 1987-1988 season when the Tomcats finished 19-6 overall and claimed the PAC title with an 11-2 mark.
Hannah Jo Coneby led three Grove City players in double figures, finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Leah Gibson added 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Megan Gebrosky chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Grove City jumped out to an early 11-2 lead with just over 16 minutes remaining but Thiel outscored the Wolverines 18-9 over the next 7:22 to tie the game at 20-20 with 6:42 to play before the intermission. Barzak's tip-in with 3:10 remaining pushed the Tomcats ahead 27-24 and Thiel headed to the break leading by one, 27-26.
The Wolverines assumed the role of the aggressor early in the second, going up by six, 36-30, following a Gibson three with 14:53 to play.
The Tomcats, fueled by a 13-0 run after watching Grove City go up by six, secured a 43-36 lead with 10:33 remaining and pushed their lead to as many as 10, 53-43, with just under five minutes remaining.
Grove City outscored Thiel 16-8 over the ensuing 4:06 and after a Gebrosky three-pointer pulled to within two, 61-59, with 47 seconds remaining.
Davis corralled a missed Tomcat free throw with five seconds to play and helped secure the victory by knocking down a pair of free throws with just three seconds remaining.
Thiel enters next week's 2012 PAC Championship Tournament as the number six seed.
