Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) and
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) each scored a season-high 26 points in Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with visiting Bethany College, but the visitors finished 4-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the first overtime period to give the Bison a 91-87 win at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Barzak registered 26 points, six rebounds, four assists, and a pair of blocks in the loss as she finished 13-of-22 from the floor. Davis went 12-of-19 for 26 points while adding seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) added 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists. The Tomcats shot 50.6 percent (40-79) from the floor but saw the Bison finish 24-of-29 (82.8%) from the free throw line while getting to the line just three times in the contest, converting on two.
Anne Wilson and Kayla Taormina each finished with 23 points in the Bison victory. Katelynn Hackathorn added 19 points and a game-high 14 points while also dishing out five assists.
Bethany shot 43.8 percent (28-64) from the floor and finished with a 46-31 edge in rebounding.
Thiel (6-17, 6-10) trailed 36-31 at the half and watched Bethany (14-9, 10-6) extend its lead to as many as 10, 45-35, with just 1:50 gone in the second. The Tomcats, fueled by a 20-9 run that covered the ensuing 7:11 to grab a 55-54 advantage with just under 11 minutes to play.
The Tomcats extended their second-half lead to eight, 68-60, on a Davis tip-in with 6:15 to play, but the visiting Bison outscored their hosts 17-7 over following 5:29 to break a 75-75 tie as Taormina converted on a layup with just 14 seconds to play in regulation.
Following a pair of 30-second timeouts called by head coach Angie Zeuch with nine seconds remaining, Davis found an open Barzak for a layup with just four seconds to play to knot the contest at 77-77 and force overtime.
Barzak's score with 3:34 to go in the first overtime pushed the homestanding Tomcats out in front 85-81, but Shepherd's three with 2:34 to play gave the visiting Bison an 86-85 lead. Wilson's jumper with just over a minute remaining saw Bethany up its lead to three, 88-85, and with the Bison knocking down 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch the Tomcats were unable to match
Thiel will return to PAC action on Wednesday, February 15 when it travels to Chatham University for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Cougars.
