GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team was defeated Saturday by Washington & Jefferson College, 65-50.
Thiel trailed by 16 points at the half, 35-19, after W&J's Kara Seamon hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining before the break.
The Tomcats trailed by 21 points, 52-31, with 8:08 remaining in the contest. A late 19-5 run by Thiel over the next six minutes and 17 seconds, however, narrowed W&J's lead to seven points with 1:51 remaining in regulation.
Freshman guard
Kayla Welty (Portville, N.Y./Portville ) keyed Thiel's late run with nine points, three of which came on a three-pointer at the 7:16 mark, while senior forward
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) scored six points.
Leanna Yeager (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) and
Cimone Reid (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) also contributed two points apiece during the run.
W&J's Emily Abraham eventually halted Thiel's momentum with just over a minute left to play when she hit a three-pointer to extend her team's lead back to 10 points.
Barzak led the Tomcats with 18 points and nine rebounds while senior guard
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) scored 10 points to go along with four rebounds, three steals and one assist. Welty scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
W&J's Chelsea Apke scored a game-high 15 points while Valerie Dunlap scored 13 points. Apke and Dunlap each recorded 11 rebounds.
The Tomcats (2-5 overall, 1-1 PAC) will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to New Wilmington, Pa., to take on the Westminster Titans. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
