GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Thiel College women's basketball team couldn't keep up with the Hiram Terriers, losing 62-57 on Sunday.
The game went back and forth in the first half with neither team holding more than a five-point advantage and the Terriers taking a 30-27 lead into the half. The Tomcats led by as many as nine in the second half, holding a 47-38 lead with under nine minutes to play but the deep bench of Hiram's was just too much for Thiel- who dressed just seven women for the game.
Senior forward
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) led the Tomcats with a game-high 20 points, while also adding six rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Her fourth point of the game, scored with 11 minutes to go in first half, was her 1,000
th in her career. With the basket she became just the 12
th Tomcat to ever score 1,000 points in a career.
Barzak is the first Tomcat to join the 1,000-point club since 2006, when then-sophomore Amber Bodrick joined the club in just her 47
th career game.
Junior
Riian McCray (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) added her fourth double-double in five games, as she had 15 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman
Jaclyn Watkins (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) was the third and final Tomcat to score in double figures, adding 14 points and six rebounds in the loss.
Samantha Morford led the Terriers with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Alexis Kemper added 16 points- including the decisive three with 36 seconds to go to give Hiram the lead for good.
Thiel will once again be in action at home on Wednesday, when they host Geneva. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
