Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) scored 29 points and
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) and
Riian McCray (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) both recorded double-doubles Tuesday to lead the Thiel College women's basketball team to its first win of the season with an 80-70 victory over Penn State Behrend.
The Tomcats never trailed in the game after Muffley staked them to an early 5-0 lead on a 3-ball and a jumper. The closest the Lions got to taking the lead was a 1-point deficit with a little over 14 minutes remaining in the first half, but Muffley deflated the home team's momentum moments later when she drained her second three-pointer of the game.
In all, Muffley made 10-of-15 shots from the floor, including a 5-of-8 effort from behind the three-point line. She also recorded four steals and three assists. Barzak scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. McCray scored a season-high 20 points to along with 11 rebounds and five steals.
Ally Burke paced Penn State Behrend with 27 points while Julia Myers scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Thiel (1-2) will host Carnegie Mellon University Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
