Tomcat Women Fall at W&J 66-51

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Tomcat women's basketball squad fell at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson College 66-51 Wednesday evening.

Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) led Thiel (5-13, 5-6) with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, going 4-of-8 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. The double-double is Barzak's third of the season.

Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) was Thiel's only other scorer in double figures, finishing with 14 points and four rebounds.

Kayla Strimel paced W&J (10-8, 5-6) with 17 points and three rebounds. Ashley Kirkpatrick added 15 points, 13 rebounds, and three assists. The Presidents finished shooting 45.2 percent (28-62) from the floor and outrebounded their Tomcat counterparts by a 44-27 margin.

W&J jumped out to an early 20-8 lead and after watching Thiel pull to within six, 22-16, with 5:39 remaining in the first the Presidents used a 13-4 run to close out the half and go into the break leading 35-20.

The Tomcats, fueled by a 15-9 run that covered the opening 5:09 of the second period, cut the deficit to nine, 44-35, but W&J quickly regained a double-digit lead and cruised to the 15-point win.

The women's basketball squad returns to action on Saturday, January 28 when they host PAC rival Westminster College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Tomcats will also be hosting their annual Alumni Day at Beeghly Gymnasium on Saturday.
