GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Tomcat women's basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to down visiting Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Waynesburg University 64-62 Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) and
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) paced the comeback effort, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively, while each finished with 11 rebounds.
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) led Thiel (5-12, 5-5 PAC) with a game-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds and a pair of blocks. Barzak's bucket with 13 seconds to play broke a 62-62 tie and proved to be the eventual game winner.
Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and also contributed six rebounds and four assists in the victory.
Hannah Hunter led Waynesburg (13-4, 8-2 PAC) with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Paige Pearce added 15 points and seven rebounds while Emily Miller chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds. Waynesburg, the top rebounding team in the PAC with a plus-8.8 margin, finished with only a 47-45 advantage on the glass over the Tomcats, who entered the day seventh in the conference (-1.5). The Yellow Jackets entered Saturday's contest in a three-way tie for the top spot in the PAC (Thomas More College, Saint Vincent College).
Barzak's tip-in with 3:25 gone in the first tied the game at 6-6, but the Yellow Jackets were fueled by an 18-2 run that covered the ensuing 6:44 and pushed their lead to 16, 24-8, with 9:41 to go in the first.
The Tomcats outscored the Yellow Jackets down the stretch 11-4, including six by Thornton, and cut the deficit to 10, 37-27, heading into intermission.
Using a 14-8 run to get the second half underway Thiel was able to trim the Waynesburg lead down to just four, 45-41, with 15:23 remaining. Barzak totaled six points for the Tomcats during the stretch.
Waynesburg countered with an 11-2 spurt to push its lead back to 13, 56-43, with just under 10 minutes to play.
Thiel began to dig in defensively with 8:38 on the clock, outscoring Waynesburg 15-5 over the next 7:06 and Davis' tip in with 1:32 remaining tied the game at 62-62. After a pair of stops, Tomcat third-year head coach Angie Zeuch signaled for a 30-second timeout with 17 seconds on the clock. Thornton connected with Barzak on a layup with 13 seconds to play to give the Tomcats their first lead of the second half, and a late miss on a Brittany Spencer three-pointer was all the Yellow Jackets were able to do to try to rally.
The women's basketball squad returns to action on Wednesday, January 25 when they travel to PAC rival Washington & Jefferson College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
