BETHANY, W. Va. – The Tomcat women's basketball team fell at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany College 76-63 Wednesday evening.
Thiel (2-12, 2-5) was led by
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy), who registered game highs in both points (19) and rebounds (12).
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, a career-high four assists, and three blocks, while
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) also finished in double figures, adding 10 points and six rebounds.
The Tomcats finished with a slight 44-42 advantage on the glass but shot just 37.9 percent (25-66) from the floor.
Bethany (8-6, 4-3) also had three players finish in double figures, with Kayla Taormina and Katelynn Hackathorn each scoring 14. Ann Wilson added 12 points while Emilee Madison notched a team-high nine rebounds.
The Bison were able to turn 20 Tomcat turnovers in 29 points and saw their bench outscore their Tomcat counterparts 26-9.
After Barzak's jumper tied the game at 4-4 with 14:20 to play in the first, the Bison used a 16-4 run over the ensuing 5:57 to go up by 11, 24-13, with 8:23 remaining in the period. Thiel trimmed the lead to six, 31-25, with just over three to play but Bethany outscored the visiting Tomcats 9-4 to close out the first and went into the break with a 40-29 advantage.
Renee Shepherd's layup with 13:33 remaining stretched the Bison lead to 21, 56-35. A Muffley three-pointer with just under five minutes to play brought Thiel to within 16, 71-55, but the Bison closed out the game never relinquishing the double-figure lead en route to 13-point win.
Thiel returns to PAC action on Saturday, January 14 when they host Chatham University. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
