GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel's
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) scored 21 points, one point shy of her career high, and pulled down seven rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Grove City held on for a 75-67 win Wednesday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Megan Grebosky led the Wolverines' winning effort with 18 points and five steals. She was equally efficient in both halves with nine points in the first and nine more in the second.
The Tomcats were in the game after the first half, trailing 35-33 after
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa., Western Reserve Academy) hit a jumper with 11 seconds left.
Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison)'s (Trotwood, Ohio, Trotwood-Madison) layup five seconds into the second half tied the game and Barzak scored a go-ahead layup to give Thiel the lead.
A foul shot by Grove City's Jenna Johnston cut the lead to one (37-36) and Hannah Jo Coneby gave the Wolverines a one-point lead with a layup just under two minutes later. They would hold the lead for the final 16:29.
Thiel made one final run near the end of the game, but couldn't make the comeback. Trailing 72-58, the Tomcats cut the lead to six with a 9-1 run before running out of time. Muffley, Thornton, Barzak and
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio, St. Peter Chanel) scored two points apiece during the run.
Davis went 7 of 11 from the floor for 15 points. Muffley also reached double-figures with 12 points. Barzak led the team in assists with five and blocks with two.
Christine Slater finished with 17 points and seven rebounds for the Wolverines. Leah Gibson was 8 of 11 from the foul line and scored 16 points while Alison Wells tallied 11 points. Gebrosky recorded a game-high five steals.
Grove City improves to 11-11 overall and 7-7 in the conference while Thiel falls to 5-17 and 3-10.
The Tomcats will play at Westminster on Saturday.
