Tomcats Fall to Waynesburg, 72-50

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Elisha Jones led all scorers with 21 points to lead Waynesburg to a 72-50 win over homestanding Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium.

The Tomcats hung close for most of the first half before the Yellow Jackets pulled away with a late run and then continued to add on to the lead in the second half.

Thiel took its final lead of the game (23-22) when Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) made a layup with 6:07 left in the half. Waynesburg countered with an 11-2 run to take a 33-25 lead at the break. Jones scored eight of her team's 11 points during the run.

Jones added nine more points in the second half as her team put the game away with the 22-point win.

Three players reached double-figures in scoring for the Tomcats with Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison)'s 13 points leading the way. Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa., Western Reserve Academy) finished with 11 points while  Barzak tallied 10. Barzak also led the team in rebounds with nine and blocks with three. Thornton registered a team-high four steals. Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio, St. Peter Chanel) contributed seven points and eight rebounds.

Thiel falls to 5-16 overall and 3-9 in the conference.The Tomcats are just two wins shy of eclipsing last year's win total with four games to play. They will travel to play Grove City on Wednesday.
