Women Outlast Westminster, Register 57-52 Overtime Win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – For the second-straight year there was late drama in New Wilmington as the Tomcat women's basketball squad notched a 57-52 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over the Titans Wednesday evening at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Thiel (2-6, 2-1) outscored Westminster (0-7, 0-3) 9-3 down the stretch in the second period to tie the game at 46-46 and were able to carry that momentum in overtime, where they led throughout the extra five minutes to lock up the five-point win.

Last season at Ridl Gymnasium Courtney Zitt's 40-foot three-point basket as time expired lifted the Titans to a 59-58 victory over the visiting Tomcats on Feb. 12.

Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) scored a season-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and corralled five rebounds to lead the Tomcats. Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds while Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) added seven points, five rebounds, and three blocks.

The Tomcats shot 35 percent (21-60) from the field and tallied 12 points off of 18 Titan turnovers.

Katie Hughes scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to pace the Titans. Zitt added 13 points and 10 rebounds while Emily Montone chipped in with seven points and four rebounds.

Westminster shot just 29 percent (20-69) from the floor and finished with a commanding 54-34 advantage on the glass.

The Titans pushed their first-half lead to six, 16-10, on an Emily Dolak layup with just over five to play and carried a 19-17 lead into the half.

Thiel got out of the gate quickly in the second, outscoring Westminster 8-0 over the opening 2:53 to assume a 25-19 lead. Zitt's layup at the 4:25 mark pushed the Titans lead to six, 43-37, before Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Early College) layup put the Tomcats back in front, 44-43, with 2:35 remaining.

Barzak's layup with 1:24 to play gave Thiel a three-point advantage, 46-43, but Dolsak's three-pointer with 52 seconds to go in regulation tied the game at 46-46, forcing overtime.

Muffley scored seven of her 23 in overtime to help the Tomcats secure the win.

Thiel will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 10 when it hosts PAC rival Saint Vincent College at Beeghly Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
