Saint Vincent Women Use Balanced Offense to Run Past Thiel 79-66

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Vincent College women's basketball squad won their fourth straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest Saturday in Greenville as they registered a 79-66 win over homestanding Thiel.

Thiel (2-7, 2-2) received strong performances by both Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) and Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy). Barzak totaled 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting to go along with six rebounds and three blocks, while Muffley also finished with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range.

Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the loss.

The Tomcats shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the field and knocked down 7-of-13 (53.8%) three-point attempts. Thiel's bench outscored their Saint Vincent counterparts by an 18-8 margin, paced by six points and three assists from Julia Monteleone (Avon, Ohio/Avon).

Elle Collins led the visiting Bearcats offensively, finishing with a game-high 19 points.

Devin McGrath secured a double double in the Saint Vincent (7-1, 4-0) win, tallying 12 points and 12 rebounds. McGrath finished just two assists shy of notching a triple double, closing with eight assists.

Emily Fenton added 13 points while Brittany Sedlock chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists.

The Bearcats shot 47.7 percent (31-65) from the floor and finished with a 44-35 rebounding advantage.

With Thiel forcing an 18-18 tie just 10 minutes into the first after overcoming an early five-point Saint Vincent lead, the Tomcats used a 9-4 run to go up five, 27-22, with 3:54 remaining in the half.

The Bearcats outscored the Tomcats 9-1 over the final two minutes and carried a 35-28 lead into the half.

The Bearcats came out strong in the second, outscoring the Tomcats 25-9 over the opening 8:11 of the second to push their lead to 23, 60-37. Thiel managed to chip away at the Saint Vincent lead, trimming it to just eight, 71-63, with 3:31 to play. The Bearcats finished a perfect 6-of-6 down the stretch from the free throw line en route to the 13-point road win.

The women's basketball squad will break for the holidays before returning to action on Friday, December 30 and Saturday, December 31 at Catholic University's Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament. The Tomcats will take on the host Cardinals on Friday at 2 p.m. Thiel play at either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. on Saturday.
