HIRAM, Ohio – Despite outscoring host Hiram College 30-24 in the second half the Tomcat women's basketball squad fell to the Terriers 61-59 Sunday afternoon.
Thiel (0-5) trailed by as many as 11 in the opening half before a
Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Early College) three beat the halftime horn to trim the Terriers lead to eight, 37-29, going into the break.
The Tomcats, fueled by a 21-9 run to open up play in the second, secured a 50-49 lead with 9:00 to play on a Hines layup.
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) tied the game at 55-55 with 5:30 remaining, but the Terriers used a 5-0 spurt over the following 3:53 to push their lead to 60-55. Muffley's layup with 21 seconds remaining got Thiel back to within three, 60-57, but Hiram was able to hold off the late Thiel charge to preserve the two-point win.
Muffley led the Tomcats with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) added 13 points and nine rebounds while
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) finished with 12 rebounds.
Cimone Reid (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) chipped in with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting in 12 minutes off of the Tomcat bench. Thiel finished with a 47-43 advantage on the glass.
Tiffany Shields scored a game-high 25 points to go along with eight rebounds for Hiram (3-2). Shields went 10-of-21 from the floor and hit on 4-of-7 three-point shots. Marisa Thomas added eight points, four rebounds, and four assists while Kelsey Durichko helped out with four points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. The Terriers knocked down 9-of-23 three-point attempts (39.1%) in the victory.
Thiel opens its 2011-2012 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at Waynesburg University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
