Tomcat Women's Basketball Take Loss On Second Day Of Tournament

WILMINGTON, Ohio --- Day two of the Wilmington / Hampton Inn & Suites / Damon's Grill Tip-Off Tournament was no better than day one for the women's basketball squad. An 82-62 setback to Kenyon College kept the squad winless for the young season. On Friday, the Tomcats dropped a 74-56 loss to the Quakers of host Wilmington.

The Tomcats (0-3) shot just 35.9 percent (23-64) from the field, but fared better at the free throw line, by shooting 68 percent (13-19).

Once again, Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) paced the Tomcats with 12 points; eight rebounds and four blocks while teammates Rianne Thorton and Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) each added 10 points respectively. Barzak was named to the all-tournament squad for her efforts.

Kenyon  (2-1) shot 47.2 percent from the field (34-72) and 71.4 from the free throw line (5-7) and forced 15 Tomcats turnovers in the afternoon encounter.

Maureen Hirt led four Lords and Ladies in double figures, tallying 19 points and seven rebounds. Morgan Korinek finished with 18 points and five boards, Kayla Ernst contributed 13 points and eight rebounds while Autumn Anderson added 10 points and nine rebounds.

The first half was a see-saw affair as both teams battled back and forth, but a late spurt by Kenyon enabled them to seize a 15 point lead,  45-30.

The Lords and Ladies would extend the lead to 18 at the start of the second half after Andrea Pohly scored a three-ball from behind the arc on a Katie Adlam assist.

Kenyon never looked back, and would go on to win the game 82-62.

Thiel returns to action on Tuesday, November 22 as they travel to Granville, Ohio to take on Denison College. Tip-off is set for 6:30 pm.
