GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel won all but two matches on its way to a 41-9 win over visiting Case Western Reserve on Saturday in a non-conference wrestling match.
The Tomcats jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead after three matches as
Tyler Pier (Erie, Pa., Harbor Creek) received a forfeit to open the match while
Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa., Reynolds) and
Jeff Marianetti (Ontario, N.Y., Wayne Central) followed with a pin and major decision, respectively. Brown improves to 13-1 with the win and is ranked second in the country. Marianetti's win gives him a winning record on the season at 3-2.
The Spartans picked up their first win at 149 pounds. Thiel freshman
Shawn King (Volant, Pa., Laurel) faced a tall task in his home debut as he had the challenge of wrestling Isaac Dukes, a returning national champion. Dukes moved to 21-1 with a first-period fall. His only loss this season was to a Division I wrestler from Wisconsin University.
Thiel increased its lead with wins in the next five matches.
Alec Miller (Transfer, Pa., Grove City) (157) and
Patrick Morris (Graysville, Pa., West Greene) (174) tallied pins and
Kraig Smith (Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell) (197) received a forfeit.
Matt Lowry (Smithfield, Pa., Albert Gallatin) had a nice 4-0 win at 165 that was more dominant than the final score indicated. Freshman
Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y., Ellicottville Central) also had a big win, notching his first college victory with a major decision ay 184.
Thiel will be off until Saturday when it travels to the highly competitive Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming College. The event is a team-tournament format with the seedings and brackets to be released Tuesday.
