GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball squad suffered a 68-61 loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City College Saturday afternoon at the Grove City College Arena in Grove City.
Christine Slater led the way for the Wolverines (6-5, 3-2), finishing with a game-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists, while Leah Gibson added 14 points and four rebounds. Alison Wells chipped in with 10 points and a game-best 13 rebounds with Megan Gebrosky also adding 10 points. The Wolverines finished shooting 44.4 percent (28-63) from the floor and managed a 41-37 edge on the glass.
Thiel (2-11, 1-4) saw four of its five starters finish in double figures. Junior
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio, St. Peter Chanel) and sophomore
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa., Western Reserve Academy) each finished with 14, with Davis tallying a team-high 11 rebounds and Muffley adding seven boards. Senior
Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa., Wilkinsburg) and sophomore
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland)both posted 12-point games with Barzak adding nine rebounds and three blocks.
The Wolverines extended their first-half lead to as many as 10, leading 21-11 with just under 10 remaining in the half, before the Tomcats responded with an 11-2 run to cut Grove City's lead to just one, 23-22, with 6:18 to go in the half. Leah Gibson's three-pointer with just over one minute remaining in the half pushed the Wolverine lead to seven, 35-28, a lead they would carry into the break.
Slater paced all scorers in the opening half with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Leah Gibson added 10. The Wolverines shot 46.3 percent (14-30) from the field and 55.9 percent (5-9) from three-point range in the first half.
Jones finished with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting to lead the first-half offense for the Tomcats. Davis chipped in with eight points and six rebounds while Barzak added seven points and five rebounds. Thiel finished the first half with a 19-17 edge in rebounds and shot a combined 40.6 percent (13-32) from the field.
As Grove City pushed its second-half lead to as many as 10, 53-43, with just under eight minutes remaining the Tomcats strung together another 11-2 run that covered 3:48 to pull to within one, 55-54, with 4:06 to play. Muffley contributed seven of the Tomcats' 11 points during the run.
Jones converted on a traditional three-point play with 38 seconds remaining to help pull Thiel back to within three, 64-61. Leah Gibson and Gebrosky each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch for the Wolverines to secure the seven-point victory.
Thiel returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 12 when it hosts Westminster College at Beeghly Gymnasium. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
